MATHYSSEN DECRIES DOUG FORD’S DEFUNDING LONDON’S SAFE INJECTION SITE

LONDON, ON – London, Ontario’s municipal health unit has received word from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health advising that it will not fund the proposed York Street safe injection site.

Irene Mathyssen, NDP MP for London-Fanshawe, denounced this decision from Vancouver, where she is representing the NDP at the Women Deliver Conference.

“Opioid deaths are up by 35% in Ontario, and the provincial government is complicit by blocking this project,” stated Mathyssen. “The evidence is clear. Safe ‎Injections sites save lives by preventing overdoses and deaths from contaminants; they also protect children, animals and the general public from dangerous, accidental exposure to drug paraphernalia. People are dying because they are being poisoned by a street level, tainted drug supply. I am horrified that Doug Ford doesn’t get that.”

The NDP has long been in favour of decriminalizing addiction and suing drug manufacturers. And the NDP supports safe injection sites as effective harm-reduction.

“The science is unrefuted. Safe injection sites work to save lives, and I am appalled that Ontario’s Conservative Government cannot see that,” said Mathyssen. “I call upon Doug Ford to reverse this decision immediately.”

Mathyssen also stated that she is available to work with provincial and municipal officials to ensure that the safe injection site project at the York Street location is realized.
