TIMID LIBERAL BUDGET 2018 WILL CAUSE INEQUALITY TO GROW

Ottawa – Irene Mathyssen, NDP MP for London-Fanshawe commented today on today’s federal budget announcement.

“The gap between Canada’s wealthiest and the rest of Canadians has never been greater, especially in London where child poverty, homelessness and unemployment are realities for more and more people. This is unacceptable.”

The NDP proposed the government use this year’s budget to close tax loopholes for the super-rich and crackdown on international tax havens, and then invest the billions of recovered revenue into a real pharmacare program to lower the costs of drugs for all Canadians.

Promises of pharmacare and pay equity in this budget have no money attached to them. And a budget that claims to make gender equity a priority has no commitment to affordable and universal child care accessible to every Canadian parent who needs it.

“This isn’t a budget. It’s a political document that makes early promises for the 2019 election. It’s designed to buy votes rather than make real economic gains for Canadians. We’ve seen it before,” said Mathyssen. “I know Canadians will see this as the sham it truly is.”

The Liberals had an opportunity to build an economy where everyone benefits, not just the few at the top. Unfortunately, they chose to defend the interests of their rich friends and tell Canadians, who struggle to make ends meet, to just get used to it.
