Questioning the Government: Asking for EI reforms to help combat skyrocketing household debt

Ms. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP): Mr. Speaker, average family debt in Canada now tops $100,000. That is $1.50 owed for every $1 earned, and since the recession began, the number of middle class families falling behind on their mortgage payments has skyrocketed.

Under the government, less than half of unemployed Canadians qualify for EI, meaning even a short-term job loss can be devastating.

When will the government start to pay attention to the plight of Canadians and fix the EI system so that they can have access to the benefits that they paid for?
