Queen's Jubilee Medal Awards Dinner

MP Irene Mathyssen is pleased to announce the following members of our community have been selected as recipients of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of their contributions to our community.

Professor Gordon McBean , of Western University, a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize recipient shared as a contributor to the IPCC, an Order of Canada 2008 recipient in “recognition of contributions to the advancement of climate and atmospheric sciences in Canada and for leadership in national and international scientific organizations, helping to generate and disseminate research findings to policymakers and stakeholders.”

Stephanie Simmons , a three time childhood cancer survivor, she has become a champion of childhood cancer awareness, founding a Gold Ribbon Campaign.

Sister Sue Wilson, Sister's of Saint Joseph, for her anti-poverty advocacy and community leadership.

Sister Joan Atkinson, Sister's of Saint Joseph, for her advocacy for affordable housing and anti-poverty work.

Dr. Munir El-Kassem, Islamic Centre of Southwestern Ontario for his work as an educator and promoter of interfaith dialogue.

Esther Marcus, Executive Director, London Jewish Community Centre, for her community leadership and program development for London's Jewish community.

Penn Kemp, London's first Poet Laureate for her contributions to our City's arts & culture.

Nancy McSloy , a writer, a community organizer, and most recently the driving force behind the Argyle Business Improvement Association.

Hector McLellan, CAW Retiree , for his years of advocacy on workplace health & safety, labour rights, and seniors issues.

Captain Jim Holmes, London Fire Department , for his community service and leadership.

Todd Sleeper, founder and organizer of the annual Thames River Clean-up for his environmental leadership.

Susan MacPhail , founding member and director of My Sister's Place transitional housing and support for women.

Caroline Pugh Roberts , volunteer with My Sister's Place, for her inspiring efforts to help support and educate others about women's issues.

Jane Roy , director of the London Foodbank, for her tirelessly anti-poverty efforts in London and her commitment to international development.

Helen Connell , former director of the United Way of London, VP at Western University, for her years of community service.

Barry Sandler , for his commitment to Scouts Canada, to our veterans, and to the environment, leading tree planting and veterans memorial efforts in the city.

Leila Madhoun , Council of Arab Women London, for her dedication to bringing together and promoting women in the community.

Dr. Donald Bondy , Professor Emeritus at UWO, advocate for the preservation and promotion of Canada's military history.

Susan Lush , director of the London Poppy Fund, for her tireless work in fighting homelessness and poverty among Canada's veterans.

Supt. William Merrylees , London Police, for his 30 years of service and committment to community policing and role in developing inter-jurisdictional relatonships with the RCMP and OPP

Inspt. Kevin Heslop , London Police, for his years of service in community policing and working to develop inter-departmental integration to deliver cost effective community policing services.

Colleen Warden , for her advocacy for Canada's veterans and her commitment to promoting morale in the Canadian Forces with "write the troops" efforts.

Edward Duffney , the driving force behind the Veterans Memorial Parkway flag display, member of the Royal Canadian Legion, retired Canadian Forces member.

Brian Harris, Victory Branch, Royal Canadian Legion for his leadership and service to community and country.

Gary MacDonald , Lambeth Branch, Royal Canadian Legion for his leadership and service to community and country.

Jack Hetherington , Duchess of Kent Branch, Royal Canadian Legion and Canadian Forces veteran.

Brian Dancey , Colour Guard Commander, Duchess of Kent Branch Royal Canadian Legion.

Tom Alexander , Duchess of Kent Branch, for his years of service to the Royal Canadian Legion.

Betty Joseph , Lambeth Branch, Royal Canadain Legion for her years of service and leadership.

Lou Deschamps , Victory Branch, Royal Canadian Legion for his years of service and leadership.

Anne Marie DeCicco-Best , London's longest serving Mayor, for her many years of service and leadership for the City of London.

London-Fanshawe MPP Teresa Armstrong will also be presenting the Provincial Queen's Jubilee Medals at the awards banquet to the recipients she will be honouring.

Tosha Densky , advocate for neighborhood child and Family Centres, Veggie City Coordinator, Community developer with Child and Youth Network, Coordinator of Breakfast with Santa

Paul Browning , Pastor at Trinity United Church, more then doubled attendance in past 8 years, involved with Interfaith Coalition on Poverty and Activist in the Community, his service is what they call a "blended service"

Daniel Aristone , City of London Police Cadet in Training, while off duty saved a man having a heart attack on the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun

Robert Sexsmith , Neighborhood Legal Services - Board of Director's co-chairperson, London & Middlesex Housing Corp, City of London Housing Advisory Committee, Age Friendly Task Service

Mike Shaw , works with less fortunate, provides soup and sandwiches, fills backpacks for homeless with living necessities, leads bible study at the Men's Mission

Delta McNeish , Pastor of the British Methodist Episcopal Church, councils those who need work through pain and disappointment with Heart 2 Heart counseling, owner of Wedding & Party Planning - donates 10% of brides total purchase to charity

Patti Dalton , Labour Council President, teaches at Clarke Rd SS and is a coordinator of many after school programs and extracurricular activities for students

Jose Rey , ensures immigrants and refugees from Latin America are included in their communities, founder of the Latin American Leadership Awards 

Bob Wright , Nominated by Victory Branch Legion for outstanding service to Veterans and Seniors in the Community

  John Wilton , nominated by the Duchess of Kent Legion, works on the Poppy Campaign very year and also works with local youth and is the Legion representative for judging youth public speaking contests

Wayne Dye , runs the Navy League Cadets London Branch, in a volunteer role with the HMCS Prevost since 1993 and has been involved with cadets for over 30 years

Sandra Ulmer , President of East London Optimist Club, started Canada Day Event at Argyle, Treasurer of Parent Council at St Robert School, volunteered at Easter Egg Hunt, Bike Rodeo and Spelling Bees

Kim McDowell , President of OPSEU Local 152 (RMHC) chair of Human Rights Committee,  and supports GBLT and disability communities rights.

Ali Haidar , Chair for Argyle Community Association, Board Member for Muslim Resource Centre, Founder London PCB Watch, basketball coach for High School basketball, involved in a business mentorship program for new immigrants, facilitated by WIL employment services.
