Bahá'í Naw-Rúz

Been a part of a multicultural community gives us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate many different traditions. The western world celebrates January 1st as the new year. The Chinese New Year is celebrated later, based on the lunar calendar. Those of the Bahá'í faith celebrate their new year, Naw-Rúz on the vernal equinox. It is a festive event observed with meetings for prayer and music and dancing. It is celebrated throughout the countries of the Middle East and Central Asia, and by those of the Bahá'í faith here in London.

Question Period: On long-term sustainable jobs at General Dynamics and throughout London?

Ms. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP): Mr. Speaker... Trying to pit workers' jobs against human rights is a cynical distraction, but it does not hide government's failure to open up new responsible markets and support long-term sustainable manufacturing jobs in our region. Instead, Liberals have gambled workers' jobs on a deal with an oppressive state, giving our city an unfair black eye.

The proposal from the Duchess of Kent Legion to purchase and move into the Officers' Mess at Wolseley Barracks, rather than the building being demolished at a cost of $20,000 to tax payers (after the government recently spent $40,000 renovating the building), has generated considerable interest in London. Good Job Losses in Southwestern Ontario Ignored by Conservatives

Ms. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP) :

Mr. Speaker, those so-called good policies have led to major plant closures at Electro-Motive Diesel, Kellogg's, and Heinz. A proposal to create 1,500 jobs at the former St. Thomas Ford plant is on the rocks. In the past eight years, under the current Prime Minister, the London region has lost a third of its manufacturing jobs. That is thousands of families placed in jeopardy because they are out of work.

We are going to be releasing over the upcoming weeks and months our plan for a Canada that is inclusive and cares about Canadians. We will introduce strategies such as ones we have already announced: Affordable Childcare, Federal Minimum Wage, and the National Strategy on Aging. Stay tuned to hear more of the exciting ideas New Democrats will be proposing to make Canada a more fair, affordable and equitable place to live and work.

Statement on Veterans Bed Closures at Parkwood Hospital

The bed closures announced at Parkwood yesterday is not a decision for which hospital administration should be blamed. There are fewer WWII and Korean War veterans still with us each day, so the demand for these beds has decreased. However, there in lays the problem, the mandate for these beds only provides access to Korean War or earlier veterans. The beds are not available to those who served as peacekeepers in Korea after the armistice, or to our peacekeepers who served in places like Cyprus, or the Golan Heights, or Somalia or the many other deploys in which Canadians participated in the 20th century.
