NDP STATEMENT ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME AND BEAUMONT-HAMEL

NDP Critic for Culture and Heritage, Pierre Nantel (Longueuil- Saint-Hubert) made the following statement:

"This July 1st marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme – one of the defining events of the First World War. Today, we honour the sacrifices of our young Canadian and Newfoundland soldiers who fought alongside the allies with courage and determination now a century ago. Despite the passage of time, we must continue to remember the immense dedication of our women and men in uniform.

I am honoured to join the Canadian delegation currently in France for these commemorations, on behalf of our Veterans Affairs critic Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) whose own great uncle, George Abener Mount, fought and laid down his life at the Battle of the Somme. She joins me and my New Democrat colleagues in honouring the memory of Canadians and Newfoundlanders who died during the First World War. They fought in the name of freedom, and we owe them our eternal gratitude.”
