London Seniors Townhall Meeting

OAS Townhall Poster

Dear Constituents & Community Partners,

Since being named the Official Opposition Critic for Seniors Issues last year, it has been my privilege to meet with a variety of seniors organizations, community service providers, and literally hundreds of individual Canadian seniors in communities across this country. I began this outreach effort to learn about the different barriers and challenges seniors face in the different regions of Canada, and to listen to seniors as well as share my own ideas about how these challenges could be overcome.  I have hosted meetings in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Saskatoon, and my colleague and deputy critic Lysanne Blanchette-Lamothe has been hosting similar meetings in Quebec. We have received a great response to-date, and are continuing our efforts.

I am pleased to sit down with the London seniors community and listen to their concerns.

I believe that after a lifetime of working to build this amazing country and contributing to Canada’s success in so many different ways, that every senior citizen today and in the future deserves to have dignity and economic security in his or her retirement.

Recently comments by Conservative MPs, including Prime Minister Harper and Finance Minister Flaherty, have created a great deal of very real concern and uncertainty around the economic security our seniors can expect in the years ahead.

That is the reason I would like to invite you to join me for a community townhall meeting from 9:00am-11:00am at my constituency office. I would like to cut through the misinformation and present to you the real facts about the Old Age Security program’s financial sustainability, with information obtained from sources including the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Chief Actuary of the OAS program. I would like to share some of my proposals to help eliminate poverty among our seniors, and provide a more solid foundation for economic retirement security. Most importantly, I want to hear from you. I want you to tell me what barriers and challenges London’s seniors are facing, and I want to hear your ideas and suggestions for overcoming those challenges.

I hope you will join me for this important community townhall.

Please do not hesitate to share this invitation with others who may be interested. However, space is limited, so please RSVP to the constituency office at: or by phoning 519-685-4745 and letting a member of my team know you are attending.
