Announcing the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal Recipients & Awards Dinner
June 4th, 2012 - 5:51pm
LONDON –With Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II are in full swing across the Commonwealth, NDP MP Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) is pleased to announce the thirty individuals to whom she will be awarding this honour.
"I'm so honoured to be included, and to be in such great company. Wow!" said Penn Kemp, London's first Poet Laureate who was selected for her contributions to the community and the country's arts and culture.
"We have so many remarkable, talented, caring people in our community," said Mathyssen. "These individuals are representative of that. Some are well known, but many are 'unsung heroes' from a diverse range of backgrounds and are involved in the community in wide range of activities."
In continuing the spirit of community action for which the recipients were selected, Mathyssen has partnered with the United Way of London & Middlesex to present the medals at a special Jubilee Medal Awards Dinner on June 27th at the Marconi Club in her riding. Tickets are available through the United Way's website at: http://www.uwlondon.on.ca/event/diamond-jubilee-medal-celebration.html. The United Way will receive all the proceeds from the event to help its work in the community.
“Celebrating volunteers and individuals committed to our community is a natural fit for United Way,” explains Andrew Lockie, CEO, United Way London & Middlesex. “We look forward to paying tribute to these extraordinary citizens and are grateful that United Way has been selected as the recipient of proceeds.”
"I was humbled and honoured just to be nominated. Actually receiving this will be overwhelming," said London Firefighter Captain Jim Holmes, who is looking forward to bringing his wife, mother, and sister to the dinner to share the evening with him.
